Nevaeh and her family live on the Sunshine Coast. They needed to travel a long way from home to access life-saving treatment in Brisbane. When families are thrown into the unfamiliar and terrifying world of blood cancer, they face the fight of their lives.
All Nevaeh’s mum, Bree, could think about was, ‘how are we going to care for Nevaeh?’ And ‘how we can stay together as a family?’
Without a place to stay near hospital, families might not be able to access treatment at all. It’s one of the reasons why people from rural areas are less likely to survive their blood cancer.
It takes the strength of a whole family to face the fight of their lives, in a place far from home. They need to stay together, supporting each other with everything they’ve got. All their focus needs to go into battling blood cancer – not into finding a place to live.
To access lifesaving treatment, Nevaeh’s family had to travel to a city far from home. When they arrived, they could walk straight into their Leukaemia Foundation accommodation.
Nevaeh is ‘heaven’ backwards, so appropriate for a caring little girl. Nevaeh loves looking after her pets and spending time at the beach.
